Katharina Addington-Lefringhausen

About: I am an Associate Professor in cross-cultural and social psychologist at Heriot-Watt University (Scotland). I am particularly interested in acculturation, intercultural competence, multiculturalism, intergroup ideologies and norms as well as any work looking into similarities and differences across cultures (e.g., construct validation studies). Yet, I am also keen to expand - looking at EDI, collective action and pro-environmental behaviour. Specifically, I currently explore how majority members' acculturation - how their identity, behaviour and values may change towards other cultures experienced in a shared society (e.g., at the workplace, University campus or neighbourhood), its implications on the intergroup relationships for majority members and their tendency to thrive (e.g., flourishing and creativity) or not (e.g., perceptions of threat).

About: A master facilitator in cultural intelligence and author of Cultural Intelligence in Practice, I'm an advocate for learning and developing with others and continually challenging yourself. I've worked with hundreds of organisations across many sectors and geographies to enhance inclusion and develop more effective and productive international teams. Themes of listening, building trust and effective leadership are central to my work. However my great love is sharing and learning with other facilitators, trainers and developers of people, particularly how we go about being aware of our cultural intelligence, assumptions and presence with the people we are working with.

Company: Cultural Intelligence Centre
About: I'm a Cultural Intelligence Certified Facilitator and General Manager of the Cultural Intelligence Centre UK. I work with clients experiencing intercultural challenges across all sectors and have a deep understanding of what CQ training offers as a solution. In the NHS, for example, this could mean using CQ to drive inclusive leadership, or to improve employee (and patient) relations, EDI goals and conflict resolution. In the education sector, this could be using CQ to enable faculty and staff to communicate better with an increasingly diverse student body, or it could be a means to instil (and measure the development of) attributes that prepare their graduates for success in a globalised world. With corporate clients the focus is often on ensuring that leaders and team members working across cultures and time zones don’t fall prey to misunderstandings that render them less effective. When supporting clients I draw on my previous professional experience working in global mobility and employee wellbeing and as an ex board member and department head at the independent publisher Canongate Books.Although I was born and (mostly) raised in London, I know what it is to cross national cultures myself, having lived in Italy, Costa Rica, Mexico, Ireland and the USA. I hold degrees in Cross-Cultural Psychology and Italian/Spanish.
