Fun facts about Foyles:
  • Failed Exams, Founded Empires: In 1903 the brothers William and Gilbert Foyle started by selling their own textbooks after failing their exams, turning a kitchen table venture into a world-famous brand.
  • The Infamous “Chit” System: Historically, customers had to get a slip for a book, queue to pay at a separate desk, and then queue again to collect their book. It was described as “if Kafka had been a bookseller”.
  • Challenging Hitler: In 1932, William Foyle sent a telegram to Adolf Hitler asking to buy the books the Nazis were burning.
  • Location with History: The current flagship store at 107 Charing Cross Road is the former home of Central Saint Martin’s art college, where the Sex Pistols played their first gig.
  • Book-Lined Chaos: The old store was famously unorganized, often storing books on the floor, yet was beloved for its serendipitous browsing experience.
  • Modern Ownership: After years of being a family-owned independent, Foyles was bought by Waterstones in 2018.
